Dec 22, 2022

#5 Rapid Ideation

With the correct tools, rapid ideation is made easy.

👉 Constructing large concepts in a short period of time.

This is a simple but efficient brainstorming strategy for quickly generating a large number of ideas. 💡

Allow everyone a set amount of time to write down as many ideas as they can. When the buzzer sounds, gather your thoughts and share them with the group. 👥

✍️ Rapid ideation is similar to free writing in that the purpose is to simply let your thoughts flow onto the paper without judgment or editing and see what happens. This approach of brainstorming is an excellent way to stimulate creativity and generate a large amount of material to work with. Furthermore, it ensures that everyone has an opportunity to engage and have their thoughts heard.

Ideas can frequently flourish rapidly if participants are encouraged to think quickly and without fear of being judged. Rapid ideation harnesses the potential of groups to generate a large number of fresh ideas/solutions for rapid evaluation.

To begin, gather a group of at least 3-4 persons who will be actively or indirectly participating in your project. Then, choose a conducive area for your session, but be warned that these sessions may occasionally get loud — so be mindful of your neighbours and prepare to write/sketch quickly with Sticky Notes. ⌛

For an effective ideation session, follow these 5 steps:

Step 1: Take 10 minutes to discuss your target audience before requesting participants to develop ideas. Who exactly are they? What do they desire? What do they require? Clearly identify the audience's dilemma, problem or opportunity for your team to answer. Put this where everyone on the team can see it. Role-play briefly as a group in order to put yourself in their shoes and begin addressing the realities of the situation. 🎯

Step 2: Next, spend 20 minutes discussing the project's scope. What are the financial and timing constraints for your project? How are these parameters likely to change? Consider best- and worst-case scenarios to help you frame your discussion. 🗣️

Step 3: It's now or never! Allow each team member 10 minutes to write down their thoughts on different coloured Sticky Notes. Everyone in your group should take part, and you should encourage them to write or sketch their ideas to assist them to articulate their arguments. When the team's ideas have been exhausted, each member should add their Sticky Notes on the wall where all ideas are revealed. Spend the next 20 minutes giving each team member a brief outline of their ideas, and then utilize the next 40 minutes brainstorming ideas/concepts that address the needs of your project. ✍️

Step 4: Testing is the final phase in this process. Spend 20 minutes evaluating the ideas and eliminating any that do not directly address your topic. Then, act out the greatest ones from your audience's point of view while contemplating how your audience would react to your idea? What are its advantages and disadvantages? Create a user flow to refer to as needed. Consider employing team voting or affinity mapping to assist in summarizing and prioritizing ideas. 🗳️

Step 5: Finally, photograph or document your Rapid Ideation session to document the experience. This will be a resource/framework to help you keep your thoughts focused and actions oriented. 📄
